Joseph Beuys was born in 1921 in Krefeld, Germany. He studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf after surviving World War II and received the title of a "Meisterschüler" in 1951 from his teacher Ewald Mataré. He became a Professor in Düsseldorf himself in 1961. Beuys died in 1986 in Düsseldorf.
